The Adoption Option

The answer isn’t exactly a simple one. Before you try to find animals for sale nearby, there are a few things to know. For starters, selling puppies and kittens in pet stores is illegal in California. Under the Pet Rescue and Adoption Act, which was passed in 2018, the state banned the sale of non-rescued animals.

There are many benefits to adoption, the most important being that you will save the life of a pet who faces an uncertain future in a shelter. Another perk of adoption is that the cost is much lower than if you buy a pet from a breeder. Micro-chipping, spaying and neutering costs, and some vaccinations are also often included in the adoption fee. Finally, adopting a pet prevents more profit from going to puppy mills, which do not put the well-being of animals first.

Specific Breeds

If you are looking for a specific animal breed, then your best bet is to find a reputable breeder. Talk to your local veterinarian, trusted family or friends with pets you love. 

Be sure to do your research and meet the breeder in person before committing to the purchase of an animal. You can also meet the animal’s parents when you visit in person. Ask for references, full medical history and ask any and all important questions you have before buying a puppy or kitten from a breeder. Proper documentation of the animal’s pedigree should be available from a reputable breeder.
