Is Acana a Good Dog Food?

Is Acana dog food good? The answer is a definitive yes. Acana dog food is one of the better dog food options out there. While some of their products are clearly better than others, overall, everything they produce is worthwhile. 

This is primarily because of their approach to quality. Not all meats or vegetables are built the same, as a high-quality meat or veggie will provide more than a sub-standard variety. The dry dog food from Acana is good, but not their best product line. Despite this, there are several great selections within this line.  

The Acana Heritage Light & Fit Formula Grain Free Dry Dog Food may be the best option. This puts poultry front and center, with chicken and turkey taking prominent places in the ingredients list. Considering the quality of the meat from Acana, this is a great thing to see.

Acana Wholesome Grains Review

With some concern about the potential dangers of grain-free dog food diets raised by the FDA, many pet owners are looking for food options that use wholesome grains to enhance the final product. Some of the options from Acana certainly fit this bill. 

The best of these may be the Acana Wholesome Grains Free-Run Poultry Recipe Dry Dog Food. Once again, this is an Acana dog food that is great when it comes to putting animal products front and center. However, alongside this, it includes oat groats as the primary grain. This adds protein, fiber, vitamin B6, and iron to the mixture. 

The only downside with many of these products is that the protein levels are a little low. However, this is expected in a dog food that emphasizes grains over meat. 

 

Acana Singles Review

The treats from Acana are some of the best products they offer. While all of their foods are great when it comes to offering plenty of high-quality ingredients, their treats are the best when it comes to simplifying that ingredient list. Even if you aren’t an expert in dog food, you can easily look at the ingredient lists for their treats and understand everything they contain. 

Take the Acana Singles Beef & Pumpkin Freeze Dried Dog Treats as an example. These contain beef (40%), beef liver (32%), pumpkin (19.9%), beef kidney (6%), beef tripe (2%), and mixed tocopherols (0.1%). Each of these are actual food products, not heavily-altered alternatives. The only one people may not be familiar with is mixed tocopherols, which is essentially just a vitamin E supplement, and even this ingredient is only found in low quantities within the treats. Together, these ingredients create a treat with plenty of protein, fiber, and other nutrients, making it generally healthy for your pet. 

While this is just one example of the treats Acana has to offer, it is indicative of many of their treat selections. Their Duck and Pear Formula, Lamb and Apple Formula, and other “Limited Ingredient Diet” selections are also top choices. 

Acana Highest Protein Review

The high-protein options from Acana may be their second-best dog food line, right after their canned food. The big edge that these options have over the other selections is the greater proportion of animal products within them. These selections are 70% meat rather than 60%. Looking at the ingredient lists for these products, you can clearly see the difference, as animal products will typically be the first five ingredients. 

We are particularly fond of the Acana Regionals Wild Atlantic Formula. This option has all of the benefits of the other options. However, it edges them out when it comes to Omega-6 and Omega-3 fatty acids.

Acana Premium Chunks & Pate Canned Foods Review

Among all Acana reviews, the premium chunks and pate options are some of the best. Right off the bat, the fact that it is canned allows your dog to get the advantages of canned food when eating it. However, there are specific advantages to the products Acana makes. 

The first is, again, the proportion of meat within. These canned foods contain 85% animal ingredients. This means they are the Acana product that best takes advantage of the company’s high-quality animal meat. 

This product line is also great because most of the products in this line use sweet potatoes as the primary non-meat ingredient. Sweet potatoes generally have fewer pesticides than other non-meat dog food ingredients and, thus, are healthier for your pet. 

Within this line, the Acana Premium Chunks Poultry Recipe in Bone Broth may be the best option. It contains meat as the first four ingredients. Even after that, the next few ingredients are all still worthwhile and include sweet potatoes, cranberries, carrots, and spinach. Together, this makes for a great product.

Are There Any Acana Dog Food Recalls?

No, Acana dog food has not been subject to any recalls in the past.
